Chef Starr To Go was started with the idea that the people Hendersonville, NC were ready for a better takeout.  On August 24th, 2006, Chef/owner Mark Starr started preparing fresh, made from scratch, gourmet meals that reach their full flavor potential when reheated in your home.  Mark got his start in the near by city of Greenville, SC where he took his first line cook job at the Bistro Europa in 1994 while finishing his BA in English at Furman University.  He worked for several years  in Greenville before moving to Burlington, Vermont where he attended the prestigious New England Culinary Institute.  Mark spent the next two years honing his skills in classical French cooking; eventually earning an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts.  Mark’s hard work paid off when he was asked to do his externship at San Francisco’s famed Zuni Café.  Under the tutelage of James Beard’s 2004 Chef of the Year, Judy Rogers, Mark further trained his palate and developed a love for the traditional dishes of Spain and northern Italy.   In 2001, Mark returned to his hometown of Savannah, Ga. where he got his first taste of gourmet takeout at Smith Brothers IGA.  Mark worked side by side with Allison Van Wirt creating upscale meals for the microwave for the residents of The Landings on Skidaway Island, one of the world’s largest private golfing communities.  Mark moved to Hendersonville in 2003 to become the executive chef of The Lodge on Lake Lure.  In just two and half years Mark established The Lodge’s dinning room as one of the best culinary experiences in the area.  At Chef Starr To Go, Mark has taken his vast culinary knowledge and applied it to take out food.  Mark prides himself on making all his soups and sauces from house-made stocks.

                                      Chef Starr’s recipe for success:
Start with fresh, whole foods, then make almost everything from scratch,
and finish by leaving a little cook-up room so you can finish the meal in your home.
